Join our agricultural field research team

Data-Lead Africa is recruiting qualified field enumerators for a large-scale agricultural baseline and adoption study across seven Nigerian states. The study covers smallholder farmers and other actors working within the cocoa, dairy, ginger and tomato value chains.

Where the work happens

Records travel from each field team to our office in Abuja, where they are checked, cleaned and returned as daily assignments.

Applications are invited from candidates who live in, or have strong field experience within, the seven study states. This is a short-term field engagement requiring travel to farming communities and other designated data-collection locations.

About the assignment

The study collects data on agricultural production, income, farming practices, access to services and finance, employment, market participation, climate-smart agriculture, nutrition, and the inclusion of women and young people.

Selected enumerators receive training and conduct face-to-face interviews using a mobile data-collection platform. Apply for the state where you currently live or have strong knowledge of the local communities, language, agricultural activities and travel routes.

Key responsibilities

  • Attend and complete the mandatory enumerator training.
  • Learn the study objectives, questionnaire, field procedures and research ethics requirements.
  • Participate in questionnaire testing and field practice.
  • Work with supervisors to prepare daily field schedules and movement plans.
  • Conduct interviews with farmers and other agricultural value-chain actors.
  • Obtain informed consent before each interview.
  • Administer questionnaires accurately using a smartphone or tablet.
  • Capture GPS coordinates and support farm-area measurements where required.
  • Transcribe and translate interviews into English as part of your deliverables.
  • Probe respectfully to clarify incomplete or unclear responses.
  • Review each questionnaire for accuracy and completeness before submission.
  • Submit completed records within the agreed timeline.
  • Protect respondents' privacy and maintain confidentiality.
  • Report field challenges promptly to the assigned supervisor.
  • Follow all data-quality, safeguarding and field-safety procedures.

Minimum requirements

  • A university degree or equivalent qualification in Agricultural Science, Economics, Statistics, Data Science, Social Sciences, Development Studies or a related discipline.
  • Relevant experience conducting surveys or field interviews.
  • Practical experience using KoboToolbox, ODK, Survey Solutions or a similar mobile data-collection platform.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English and at least one language commonly spoken in the selected state.
  • Ability to transcribe and translate interviews into English.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to rural and remote communities.
  • Availability for the complete training and fieldwork period.
  • Strong communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Honesty, accuracy, patience and respect for respondents.

Preferred experience

Preference will be given to applicants who have:

  • Conducted interviews with farmers or rural households.
  • Worked on agricultural, livelihood, market-system or rural-development studies.
  • Collected quantitative or qualitative data for research and evaluation assignments.
  • Worked with research firms, development organisations, NGOs or government programmes.
  • Used GPS-enabled digital tools for farm mapping or land-area measurement.
  • Good knowledge of agricultural activities and rural communities within the selected state.
  • Experience interviewing women, young people, pastoralists, cooperatives and underserved groups.
